The world of pensions comes with a long list of acronyms that can feel overwhelming, especially when you are trying to make informed decisions about your retirement planning.
Navigating Isle of Man pension terminology requires familiarity with both local Manx schemes (like the Manx State Pension and PFS) and standard UK terms, particularly as many Isle of Man residents have connections to a UK pension scheme in one way or another.
At Boal & Co, we believe that clarity is essential. Below is a simple guide to the most commonly used pension abbreviations for Isle of Man residents.
Core Isle of Man Terms
PFS: Pension Freedom Scheme - A flexible, tax-efficient retirement benefits scheme available in the Isle of Man.
GUS: Government Unified Scheme - The main defined benefit/contribution pension scheme for Isle of Man civil servants and public workers.
MSP: Manx State Pension - The state-provided retirement pension for Isle of Man residents.
MPS: Manx Pension Supplement - A localised top-up benefit payable to qualifying individuals on top of their basic state pension.

Scheme & Benefit Types

SIPP: Self-Invested Personal Pension - A type of DC scheme that gives you greater freedom to choose and manage your own investments.

IPP: International Pension Plan - An offshore pension scheme that can be set up by companies for their global workforce or individuals where a local scheme in their country of residence is not available or suitable.
AVC: Additional Voluntary Contribution - Extra payments made to increase your DC pension scheme pot or enhance your pension entitlement in a DB pension scheme.
EOW: Expression of Wishes - A form to guide the pension trustees on how you would like your remaining DC pension scheme pot or DB pension scheme benefits (where not prescribed within the scheme rules) to be distributed in the event of your death. This can also be referred to as DBN (Death Benefit Nomination).
PCLS: Pension Commencement Lump Sum - The tax-free cash lump sum you can take when you access your pension. The Isle of Man permits 30%, or 40% if taken from a PFS. People may also use the terms TFC (Tax Free Cash) or TFLS (Tax Free Lump Sum).
Moving on to UK pension acronyms, understanding these is much easier when you categorise them by types of pension schemes/regimes, withdrawals, and allowances . Here are the most commonly used (that are not already listed above):

AA: Annual Allowance - The maximum amount you (and your employer) can pay into your UK pension schemes each tax year before you face a tax charge – currently £60,000 p.a. (compared to £50,000 p.a. currently for Isle of Man pension schemes).
MPAA: Money Purchase Annual Allowance - A reduced annual allowance that you can contribute to your flexibly accessed DC pension to get tax relief whilst still being in drawdown (currently £10,000), triggered if you start taking taxable income flexibly from a DC pension scheme.
Finally, there are numerous regulatory, tax and official bodies, both in the Isle of Man and in the UK, that can have influence over an Isle of Man resident’s pension schemes, depending on their personal circumstances.
